About AJF

The Africa Jobs Fund catalyses high-impact companies that can dramatically boost incomes for people in Africa. We focus on two areas with the biggest potential to move the needle: export manufacturing and international labour mobility.

We venture-build new companies (identifying high-impact opportunities and sourcing talented founders to build them), and we make catalytic investments in existing companies.

We intend to mobilise $100m towards these spaces over the coming years, with which we aim to create $50bn in income gains for African workers and double the lifetime incomes of over 250,000 low-income people.

We launched at the end of May and have made several deployments since. We’ll do 15+ this year, and we’re aiming for 50+ next year. We’re scaling rapidly and we need someone to run the show and make sure that we have the systems to scale smoothly.

The role

You’ll run operations for the fund and own most of what makes it work: the deployment process, the internal systems, reporting, hiring, and a good share of the investment support. There’s no playbook to hand you, so you’ll be the one writing it.

You’ll work closely with the partners, and directly with the finance and legal teams at Renaissance Philanthropy on structuring, compliance and reporting.

What you’ll own

  • Systems that scale. Getting from several deployments a year to 50+ means high-quality systems are essential. Deployment pipeline, diligence workflows, portfolio tracking, reporting, internal tooling, knowledge management, cost-effectiveness analysis, deal structuring/templates. You design it, you build it, you own it.
  • Hiring.Finding and closing exceptional people, both for our own team and for the ventures we back. The people we want aren’t applying to job ads, so you’ll go and find them, run the process, and sell them on the opportunity yourself.
  • Investment support. Structuring, documentation, disbursement and portfolio management, working alongside RenPhil’s finance and legal teams. You don’t need to be a lawyer or an accountant. You do need to be fluent enough to run the process and catch problems early.
  • Everything else. Budgets, vendors, compliance, hiring logistics, travel, funder reporting. If it needs to work for the fund to function, it’s yours, and we’ll expect you to make the call without checking in first.

Who we’re looking for

  • You’re exceptionally talented and you work hard. We’re small and fast and the bar is high.
  • You have high agency. You see a problem, decide what to do about it, and do it. Very little direction suits you fine.
  • You use AI constantly. A large share of your work should run through these tools, and the systems you build should have them baked in.
  • You have strong prior experience in investment and building systems for investors (or philanthropies).
  • You’re bought into our thesis and deeply motivated to create large-scale income gains for workers across Africa.

Background and experience

  • 5–10 years of experience, including running operations at a fund. Venture, PE, impact or philanthropic all count. What matters is that you’ve seen how a fund actually works, and that you’ve dealt with the boring parts: deal admin, disbursement, compliance, funder reporting.
  • You’ve built systems from scratch rather than inherited and maintained them.
  • Good analytical judgement, and comfort deciding on incomplete information.
  • You have experience working in Africa.
  • Experience in early-stage companies or in either of our focus areas is a bonus.

Compensation, location, and logistics

  • Compensation: Competitive.
  • Location: Remote, with a strong preference for candidates based in Africa.
